St. Mary’s is the parish church  of Tatsfield. In addition to the regular worship on Sundays and other religious festivals it is regularly used for baptisms, weddings and funerals. It is used for both Anglican and Roman Catholic services. It also welcomes large numbers of visitors, particularly for weekend teas, to its flower festival and for the peace and beauty which are to be found in its building and churchyard.

Anglican services include Holy Communion at 8 a.m. and at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The 10 a.m. service on the second Sunday of each month is usually designed specifically for families, lasting about 45 minutes, although all are always welcome to all services: on most Sundays in term time there is a children’s group that meets in the hall during the first part of the 10 a.m. service.

Roman Catholic Mass is held on some Sundays at 9 a.m. and some Fridays at 7.30 p.m.: further details may be obtained form the Stuart Geary on 01959 577377.

The building is a delightful church seating a congregation of approximately 60 in a prominent position on high ground with extensive views to the South West. It is largely 11th and 13th century with Victorian and recent additions, all of which successfully complement one another. It is a listed Grade 2 building. The church is constructed of clunch with an infilling of flint and Kentish ragstone quoins and dressings. It has brick and stone buttresses with tiled shoulders and the Chancel and north side are rendered.

The churchyard sits high on the North Downs with spectacular views to the South. It is maintained almost entirely by volunteers and with aspects of conservation in mind.

THE NEW ARRANGEMENTS AT ST MARY’S

As you will already know, our Parish Priest, Catherine, left Tatsfield at the end of August.  In last month’s Magazine she described her next steps and we all wish her well.  She goes with our heartfelt thanks and will leave both St Mary’s Church and Tatsfield with a sense of loss and a space difficult to fill.

For St Mary’s, this is nothing new.  When a priest leaves, there is always a period when the church has no resident priest and until such time as a new one is appointed everything is the responsibility of the churchwardens and the PCC (Parochial Church Council).  They have the job of finding clergy to come to take most of the usual Sunday services as well as funerals, weddings, baptisms, etc.  We will have the continued support of Revd Ruth Rainbird and Revd Nigel Copsey, who are part time non-stipendiary (ie unpaid) priests living in Limpsfield Chart and we have several members of the congregation who are able to contribute, for example, by planning and leading some services.  We are confident that St Mary’s will be able to provide for all the demands made of it and even expect that we shall grow as a community over these next few months.  Naturally, the continue support of villagers will greatly help us to achieve this.  Please come along to our services, even if that is not possible every week:  you will find details in the diary section of this Magazine.

We continue to welcome requests for baptisms, weddings and funerals or for any other appropriate matters.  If possible, phone the Rectory on 577289 and speak to our administrator, Frances Withers, who is usually there at these times:  Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2.30 pm – 5 pm and Fridays 9.30 am – 12.30 pm.  Alternatively, a message may be left on the answerphone there or if it is urgent, phone one of us.
